Commissions and Advisory Councils

In addition to the administration of over seventy programs that serve an estimated 60,000 residents of Monterey County, the Department of Social and Employment Services administers the Area Agency on Aging (AAA), Community Action Partnership (CAP), and the Workforce Investment Board (WIB). These agencies serve as lead agents for the assessment, planning and development of services and supports for their respective constituent base. These agencies also serve as the fiduciaries responsible for the allocation and monitoring of funds totaling over 7.4 million dollars.

Area Agency on Aging (AAA)

The AAA was established through the federal Older Americans Act amendments of 1977. The County Board of Supervisors designated DSES as the local agency responsible for the administration of the AAA in 1982. The mission of the AAA is to plan, advocate, and coordinate services for persons 60 years of age and older. Led by a 15 member Advisory Council, planning efforts focus upon home and community based care. Annually, the AAA allocates two million in federal and state funds to local nonprofit organizations serving seniors and their family caregivers.

The WIB contracts with the Office for Employment Training (OET) and other community based programs for the delivery of employment and training services, allocating over 5.4 million dollars in federal and grant funding.
